THE LAW A SCHOOL MASTER

John 7:19

Morning Meditation 12/2/2015

John 7:19, "Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law?”

The law was not given to save; it was given to diagnose man’s condition.

Man is helpless to save himself. How is this proven to be true? Romans 3:19-20, "Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin."

The law was addressed to the Jews. “Now we know that what things so ever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law…” The law was given to Moses for the children of Israel. Jesus plainly said in our text that the Jews did not keep the law.

The law was given to stop men’s mouths. Men claimed to be right with God by keeping the law. This is what the inspired Word of God says: that “every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.” The law produces guilt. Man attempts to keep the law and is an utter failure.

No one ever kept the law but Jesus. “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin." Man discovers his sinfulness in his attempt to keep the law. This is what the law says. The law says man comes short of the glory of God and needs to be saved some other way.

Romans 8:1-4, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."

The law was given as a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. Gal 3:24 “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Gal. 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.”

In man’s futile attempt to keep the law, he throws up his hands and says, ”what can I do? The answer to that is to come by faith to the Lord Jesus and you will be delivered from the law and put into the loving arms of Jesus Christ.

Except a man be born again he cannot be saved. Man is not born again in his attempt to keep the law. He is drawn by the schoolmaster to Jesus for the forgiveness of sins and the new birth.

"Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law?” No man will be saved by keeping the law. It is through repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

May the Lord bless these words to our hearts.

In Christ
